AUs are tricky things because there are some writers who will use an Alternate Universe as an excuse to completely rewrite a character's personality. While some adjustments can be made depending on circumstances, the general framework of how someone behaves, who that person is, is fairly static in my opinion. I like that you have Nino still be snarky and somewhat temperamental, I like how he's pushy and clingy and I loved how he was willing to turn out the light for Sho so that he'd keep coming over, even though he's afraid of the dark. (I'd like to know if there's a reason for that, btw. It seems oddly specific. Sho's fear I get, but Nino's seems like a conditioned response and I'm curious about it.)
If you have the time or inclination, there's a really good documentary about deaf culture and deaf performers in entertainment called "See What I'm Saying?: The Deaf Entertainer's Documentary". It's about 90 minutes long and it's a really interesting look at what it means to be deaf and/or hard of hearing and it makes some really great points clear about how there is no universal sign language and things change from country to country or even from region to region.
